Just as the name suggests, balance bikes allow toddlers to learn how to roll upright on two wheels as they scoot around the neighborhood.
There are a lot of balance bikes on the market today that cater to kids ages 18 mos. – 5 yrs and up. It’s important to buy for the now and not for the future. A bike that is too big or heavy for your child might lead to overall frustration and impair their ability to learn to balance on a bike. First: Getting a proper fit on a balance bike requires one simple measurement, your child’s inseam measurement. A proper seat height should have the child sitting on the seat saddle, with feet flat on the ground, with a slight bend in the knees. A good starting point is 1″-1½” less than the child’s inseam. Second: Use the Rule of 30: A simple rule to follow when selecting a balance bike. A balance bike should weigh no more than 30% of your child’s weight. An easy way to determine this is to follow a simple calculation: (child’s weight) x (0.3) = (max bike weight).
