Roads are flat and wide with paved shoulders, climate is benign. Nearly all children in Mission are bussed or driven to school even though in this small town most are less than 2 miles from schools. Schools have huge parking lots but empty bike racks. Many children are way too fat and/or diabetic. Except in colonias, the rural slums, not enough children play outside. Most of the cyclists I see on the road are either old Winter Texans like me or they are Mexican men too poor to own a car who scrounge trash to earn a bit of extra money. There are club rides for roadies with carbon fiber bikes and Lycra but almost no bicycle commuters. I have never understood this. There are a few multiuse ttrails and some of them are long and cover a useful route. They are however almost devoid of bicycle traffic, especially on weekdays.
